Ahmed Maher is a Canadian Egyptian Oud master and composer whose work elegantly explores and redefines the boundaries of acoustic instrumental sounds. Based in Vancouver, Maher crafts vast, cinematic soundscapes where the ancient geometry of Arabic maqams enters into a fluid dialogue with contemporary jazz and ambient minimalism. His music is an architecture of stillness and breath - a deeply contemplative journey that uses the resonant strings of the oud to map out spaces of emotional release and inner reflection.
Having shaped his artistry under the legendary Iraqi master Naseer Shamma, Maher draws profound inspiration from the evocative storytelling of Anouar Brahem and the refined expression of Nazih Borish. His artistic footprint spans performances across the Middle East, Europe, and North America. A visionary collaborator, he has engaged in rich cross-cultural musical dialogues with global icons and jazz luminaries, including Grammy-winning composer Fathy Salama, Belgian-Tunisian vocalist Ghalia Ben Ali, ARIA Award-winning accordion virtuoso Anthony Schulz (Australia), saxophonist Benjamin Koppel (Denmark), and bassist Thommy Andersson (Sweden).
Rooted in a deep respect and understanding of his heritage and Ancient Egyptian ancestral lineage, and equally driven by a modern jazz improvisational spirit, Maher’s signature approach treats music as a form of sonic meditation. By prioritizing spaciousness, subtle tonal nuances, and the profound resonance between the notes, he invites listeners to slow down and reconnect with the self. His critically acclaimed debut album, Maktoub, stands as a definitive statement of this philosophy - an immersive, transformative listening experience as his response to the maddening world today, carrying the timeless voice of the Oud into entirely new horizons.
